[Wartburg Theological Seminary tower and chapel, Dubuque, Iowa]
Title
[Wartburg Theological Seminary tower and chapel, Dubuque, Iowa]
Creator
Loemker, Herman J., 1868-1937
Description
This image was taken looking across the quadrangle at the front of the Chapel and tower that were under construction on the campus of Wartburg Seminary. Together with buildings shown in images LO 084 and LO 085, construction for the chapel and tower buildings began in 1914. The complex, which also included classroom and living spaces, was dedicated in 1916. The tower building was specifically modeled after the famous Wartburg Tower in Eisenach, Germany where Martin Luther found refuge in 1521. The buildings were interconnected and were constructed of limestone quarried on site. The address of 1621 Wartburg Avenue is now 333 Wartburg Place. The number 1274c is written on a label that has been stuck to the lower left corner of the slide.
