The center of the photograph features a steam locomotive that is coming through a tunnel in a rocky hill in East Dubuque, IL. There is a large, white cloud of steam rising above the front engine. There is a small road to the left of the train and there are men and women standing there, looking at the train. Closer to the foreground and to the left side is a photographer with his camera on a tripod and covered with a cloth. There is a group of boys standing next to him and an older boy is looking at the photographer taking this photograph. To the right of the train and tracks is another group of two women looking at the train, standing next to a telegraph pole. Behind this pole is a vehicle. Right next to the train is a man standing in front of a small building and in front of the building is a sign that reads, "Railroad Crossing: Look Out For The Cars."
