A light colored stone house with cracks all over it is the center of the photograph. The roof is in bad shape as the shingles are breaking and some are not there. The stone house has a porch that covers the width of the house. In the center is an open door and Edward Hoffmann stands in front of the door and is leaning against a wooden beam that is holding up the roof. To the right is a window with something on the window sill. Leaning against the wall next to the door is a sack full of something. To Edward's right, and the photograph's left is Emil who is sitting on a barrel with his left leg on the ground and his right leg up, with his right foot resting on another wooden beam. Emil is reading and looking at a book in his hands. The beam has a hat at the very top, underneath the porch.
