St. Wenceslaus (Cedar Rapids, Iowa)

"Immigrants of Slavic ancestry in the Cedar Rapids area gather at Immaculate Conception Church in Cedar Rapids for Sunday Mass. For their convenience, Father Clement J. G. Lowery frequently invited Bohemian missionaries. Prominent among them were Father Anthony Urban of Spillville and Father John Zlebcik of Solon. The cooperation of these priests kept many Bohemian immigrants faithful in spite of the efforts of the Free Thought Movement to win them from the faith, at a time of the greatest Czech influx. Work on the first church was begun in 1874. Labor and materials were furnished by the men of the parish, working after their regular employment. It was not until 1890 that the church was ready with tower and galleries."
