Title

Immaculate Conception (Sand Springs, Iowa)

Description

"The first Catholics bought a stone church built by the Sand Springs Baptists at the beginning of Civil War and closed for ten or more years. The church was dedicated to the Mother of God under her title of the Immaculate Conception. The first recorded baptism was in 1878. Father J.P. O’Connor, pastor of Monticello, was the first to care for them. His successor at Monticello, was the first to care for them. His successor at Monticello, Father John Tobin, continued that pastoral care from 1884 to 1887. When Father Tobin was transferred to the Fairbank parish, on Christmas Day 1887 Father John McCormick began 26 years of service to the Monticello parish and its Sand Springs mission."
