A bartender is posing behind a long bar, and in front of another counter above which may be seen mirrors in an ornate wooden frame. The arches in the wooden frame echo the image in the mirrors of reflected arches elsewhere in the large room. Numerous glasses and bottles are lined up in rows on the rear counter. A cash register with a sign that reads “Get a receipt” may also be seen on the rear counter. Other visible signs include “Hurry Back,” and a certificate that reads in part “Union Bar.” The number “67” has been written on the emulsion side of the negative and is visible in the upper right corner of the picture. No number is written in the upper left corner.

According to the Encyclopedia Dubuque (www.encyclopediadubuque.org), the site at 212 Main Street has been the site of an inn or hotel since 1844. The structure in this image burned in April of 1913, and was rebuilt shortly thereafter.
